This year’s KOBA exhibition in South Korea saw PMC partnering with its local partner Music Metro to highlight music mixing in immersive audio formats such as Dolby Atmos and showcase the exciting range of monitoring products that PMC offers this burgeoning market.

The four-day show in Seoul, which ran from May 16th – 19th, featured a large and impressive booth equipped with a 9.1.4 Dolby Atmos system controlled by a 24-channel Avid S6. The PMC loudspeakers used for the entire system included PMC6-2 monitors for left, right, and centre channels; four PMC Ci65 monitors and two PMC Ci140 monitors for surrounds; four PMC Ci65 monitors for overheads and two PMC8-2 subs.

Throughout the show, Grammy award-winning producer and engineer David Rideau delivered a series of Dolby Atmos presentations in which he discussed his own experience of mixing music in this format. These events attracted many show visitors keen to learn more about the creative possibilities that immersive audio delivers.

Dan Zimbelman, Senior Export Business Development Manager for PMC, says: “PMC monitors are now the benchmark for Dolby Atmos music studios, having been installed in numerous high-profile facilities worldwide. Showcasing our products to such an enthusiastic audience was hugely rewarding. David and I were blown away by the incredible Dolby Atmos Demo Suite that Music Metro had built. It was, without doubt, one of the best-sounding demo rooms we have ever experienced at a show.”

In addition to the KOBA demonstrations, PMC and Music Metro also collaborated on two Master Class seminars that were held at the South Korea University of Music and Arts (KUMA), which has recently installed a 7.1.4 Dolby Atmos studio equipped with PMC6-2, Ci65 and Ci140 monitors, plus two PMC8-2 subs. The university also has a second studio equipped with a PMC IB2S-AII system and an SSL Duality console.

David Rideau and Dan Zimbelman took centre stage, delivering Master Classes – one on Atmos for Postproduction and one on Atmos for Music – to students and University professors.

“Participation at both events was excellent, and the students appreciated having the opportunity to talk to David and learn from his extensive knowledge of immersive audio mixing,” Zimbelman says. “We had fantastic support from the University and Music Metro, which sent a team of technicians to help at the event and handle all the social media posts throughout the day.”

The seminars were both filmed, and Rideau and Zimbelman also gave video interviews. This content will be turned into curriculum classes for future audio students who want to learn about high-quality monitoring and Dolby Atmos mixing.
